Artist Statement
My earliest memories involve watching my mother bring fairytales and celestial maidens to life with nothing but pencils and curves. Since then, I have been constantly inspired by the meaning and symbology of women in mythology and folklore. From the story of Ophelia to the myths of Persephone and Mazu, I have reflected and explored the themes of life, death, joy, and rebirth through the lens of “drowning.” Within these stories, I find a bit of myself– that is, a sense of both being alive and invigorated, yet constantly subsumed and drowning. Tragic yet free, doomed yet defiant, dead, and yet more alive than ever. Through the lens of drowning, I seek to constantly explore all these dualities and paradoxes while also honoring the stories, fairy tales, and myths that are the dearest to my heart.
To explore this concept, I primarily work in watercolors, a medium that can be unpredictable and fickle to work with. Yet no other medium feels as fitting, considering my desire to convey flow, movement, and life through my artwork. The process of working with watercolor paint feels like a dialogue with the medium, which allows my original vision to come to life in unexpected and inspiring ways. Furthermore, influenced by the works of Alphonse Mucha and Gustav Klimt, I also seek to add juxtaposition and texture to my work through the use of color pencils and gold ink.
Artist Bio
I am a self-trained artist who has been honing my skills in watercolor painting and pencil lineart since I was eight. Working with watercolors, color pencils, and gold ink, I explore the concept of drowning, life, and rebirth through various women in mythology and folklore through paintings rich in symbology, flowing lines, and movement. Starting in 2023, I have started exhibiting my work, most notably an exhibition at Artio Gallery in NYC.
